PC Data Ranks iBook Number One Portable in U.S.

 

CUPERTINO, California January 25, 2000 Apple's iBook* has earned thenumber one spot among all portable computers in the U.S. retailmarket for the fourth quarter of 1999, according to PC Data's PortablesHardware Tracking Service (October December, 1999). Also,according to the same report, the combined sales of Apple's iBook andPowerBookÆ portable computer lines gave AppleÆ a 10 percentshare of all portables in the U.S. retail market for the same quarter.

Apple1s results speak for themselve the Company is delivering a strongportable line for both consumer and professional customers, said Stephen Baker, PC Data senior analyst and director ofHardware Research. Apple is poised to continue their successgoing forward with these products.

We are delighted that iBook is the hottest selling portable in the U.S.,said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. iBook is delivering thefeatures and power that consumers and educators want in a portable.

Launched July 1999, iBook features a 12.1-inch TFT display; a PowerPC G3processor; a built-in 56K modem and 10/100BASE-T Ethernetnetworking; and a built-in USB port and CD-ROM drive. iBook is the firstwireless ready portable computer, with two built-inantennas and an internal slot for Apple's AirPort wireless networkingcard (optional). With AirPort wireless networking, up to 10computers can share one Internet connection at speeds up to 11 megabitsper second and distances up to 150 feet (half a footballfield) all without wires. iBook's design innovations include arubber-coated translucent enclosure for durability, a pullout handlefor safe carrying, and a unique latch-less closing mechanism for fasterand easier access.
