Search Engines and other robots
Just that, silly! Search engines and other robots, duh!
DogPile - A MetaPhasic, Multi-Search-Engine, Search Engine...
What DogPile does is it searches other search engines for the desired search items. It save you the trouble of having to go to other search engines and learning each one's particular 'language'. It is also surprisingly fast. If you need more specific search results, you might try one of the other engines below, starting with HotBot, but for an overall chance of finding something, nothing is better than the DogPile.... The name stinks, but atleast you won't forget it!
HotBot - Simply the best search engine.
HotBot tends to return more hits per search than the others, and is also most up-to-date, with 10 million web pages searched and updated into its database EVERY DAY.
Netscape Internet Directory - Need a search engine? It's here... TRUST ME!
This has most of these search engines, plus a lot more! I mean they have search engines out the.... well, you get the idea. Go there and check it out for yourself.
Yahoo! - Topical directory of sites submitted by other netizens
Not really a "search engine" per se, but rather a list of sites that other people have submitted. This yields fairly good results on hits, but is sowmewhat more limited in scope than a true search engine would be. All in all pretty good, but not *awesome*
AltaVista - Web and NEWSGROUP searches
AltaVista searches not only Web sites, but also Usenet (newsgroups) locations. Most others only search web pages. Not as many hits as HotBot, but powerful in its own right.
Infoseek - web, newsgroup, email addresses, company directoris & more
Infoseek scans just about everything. Use this to get hits on a subject so you can get more keywords. Then use HotBot on those keywords... The nicest thing is that I've installed QuickSeek on our systems, which is a search window ON the browser menu bar that automatically jumps to infoseek's search routine and prints out the results of your search.
Lycos Home Page - offers a rating system (points) on hits
The oldest search engine, is often a favorite for ease of use and the fact that it rates the hits with points (apparently to rate how *neat* a particular web page is... I guess). Other than that...? Big deal.
Exite Com - Apple sponsered search engine, topical in nature.
Excite Com's search page (sponsered by Apple). Works more like a topical index (see Yahoo!'s description), but still pretty good. Contains quite a few links to other areas, and has a daily news section.
Download.com - a searchable database for software and updaters.
Download.Com has software directories for most areas of computing, and even offer IBM software (in a different directory so as not to confuse you with "is this for Mac or not?") and often offers updaters for software you already have.
SHAREWARE.COM - software, Software, SOFTWARE. (and other stuff, too.)
Very similar to DOWNLOAD.COM, you can download a *LOT* of software. This site offers access to news, help sections, and other useful stuff. Oh, yeah... it has a searchable database, also.
Version Tracker - Wonder if that piece of software your running is outta date? No prob. Come here!
At http://www.versiontracker.com they keep track of all your favorite Macintosh software, and keep up to date records on which version is the latest and greatest. They can even tell you a little bit about each piece of software, just in case you don't have it, and want to get it. They even tell you what system requirements are needed to run it. Seriously, this is one of the best places to get Mac 'wares....
Ultimate Apple Search - Hardware, Software, Music...
Simple, self-guided search area, primarily focussing on Apple stuff.
EarthLink - Search: a list of search engines with descriptions
Contains most of the above search engines, plus a couple of others.
Webster Dictionary - The Marion Webster Dictionary Online
Wonder what kind of sycophantic, sciolistic, sophistry is included in this website? Is it just a little bit of maternalistic furtive guile by some sacerdotalistic writer, without the style? Between this link and the Thesaurus link below, you should be able to limn with laborious lucubration and tittilate with your vast comprehension of superb syllabication scintillation and flabbergast your friends and foes alike. Inn uthur werds, lyke, fer shure, doode!
Webster Thesaurus - The Marion Webster Thesaurus Online
Whether you are looking for other words that mean exenterate, expiate, or extirpate, you can find it in this nifty online thesaurus.
Locations to download software for the Mac - ranging from games and applications, to utilities and system updates - and some resources for information, like MacAddict magazine.
Hyperarchives - If you want a Macintosh file, you would do well to look here.
BEAUCOUP number of programs and updaters for Macs. stars: ***** Configuration holds hundreds of files for Macs. This is a VERY simple smorgasb..., smorgassbo..., smorgu..... *TRUCKLOAD* of files. It ain't wrapped very pretty, but the toys are neat! Shareware Shop - Thousands of Shareware, Games, Freeware, and much more!
MacUpdate.com - Updates and software by the truckload. A great alternate for Version Tracker.
Updates. (duh.) Seriously, though, this place really is a great alternative location to check for software updates and new releases. Between this site and VersionTracker (c.f.) you can find just about anything for the Mac. Pretty quick transfers, too. Well, usually, anyway.
A 'net magazine layout, with a software section as well. Nice place for Macintosh and Apple news, and if you are looking for a modest selection of 'wares.
QuickTime VR is Apple's award-winning photorealistic cross-platform virtual reality technology that makes it possible to explore places as if you were really there! All major applications that play QuickTime movies can also play QuickTime VR movies. This is really some awesome stuff, and if you don't already have QTVR, you need to get it NOW!
EvangeList - Guy Kawasaki's great jump-off place for lots of Mac information, 'wares, etc.
Run buy Guy Kawasaki (no relationship to the motorcycle, I think...) this web site is absolutely fantastic as a resource place for just about anything having to do with the Mac. Guy is world-renown for being "The" Mac Evangelist, and he has quite a few resources if you are looking to help convert some poor, misguided Wintel user, and thus help save their soul... not to mention their sanity! Also has web creating stuff available.
Apple: OS Discussion Forum - Info on Mac OS, AppleScript, and other 'techie stuff'
This site contains quite a bit of information about how to use such things as Mac OS (both 8.x, and 7.6.x) and a whole lot of AppleScript answers. Not exactly a 'wares download site, but close enough that I thought I might include it.
Satellite images, RADAR, forecasts and travel advisories, along with maps for traveling to those areas you probably should be avoiding...
World Weather - Yahoo's weather, forecasts, and satellite images for the world
This website has quite a bit of information for travelers and just about anyone who needs a good weather report or forecast. It has access to satellite, radar, and a whole bunch of other information about what's happening outside.
Corpus Christi Weather Information - Yahoo's Weather just for the Corpus Christi, Texas, area.
Just a shortcut to the Corpus Christi site, rather than having to weed your way through the above website's host of maps and pages. This is just done as a consideration to those of us in ST. MUG. The radar imagery is not all that great, so you might want to use the site listed below for a better radar image. This site, however, does have an optional looping gif image so that you can view the movement of the storm cells.
Corpus Christi Radar Image - Texas close up.
This isn't a live feed, instead, it is Intellicast's radar image for south Texas, and includes cloud tops, direction, and movement in knots. Considerably better image and detail over the Yahoo weather site (c.f.), but does not have the option of a looping gif image like the Yahoo site's radar image page. In order to know when the last image was taken, subtract 6 hours from the "zulu" time; 5 hours if we are observing daylight savings time. (i.e., if it reads 0800z, then the image was taken at 0200 CST, or 0300 CDT.)
The Weather Channel - Some really nice weather information, maps, radar, and satellite images.
Like the link name says... Of course, if you just want to go straight to the Corpus Christi Weather Information.... The weather channel site has some really nice banners!
Some pretty advanced weather stuff. Worth looking into.
Unfortunately, this is a GOPHER site, but still, some of the information is really nice and up to date - even if the server is not. They have information such as hurricane tracking, satellite images (visible, infrared, and water vapor), surface analysis (temperature, dew point, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, and moisture convergence.) All this and more, makes this a very useful place for getting the more scientific information about the weather. Why you would need to know all this is beyond me, but it's here, none-the-less.
Texas Department of Transportation - Check the roads before you go!
Need to know if there is a travel advisory for the area you are going to be going through? Wonder if there is construction that might slow you down? Or do you want to know about Texas events and places to go for your vacation? Well, this is the place to come. Whether you are wonder about where to go, or how to get there, this site has all (or at least most) of the answers to your questions. They are even considerate to tell you what the laws are so that you know if you have to wear your seat belt or buckle your kids on, or even if that lemon of a car your brother-in-law still drives is legal on the roads.
Maps. Maps. Maps. - If you need to get somewhere or know where something is, this is the place.
Need to know where that company picnic is? What about that new doctor you need to go see? Or just where the heck is Aunt Josephine's house? Well, if you're looking to find a map of it, chances are, it's here. While I have noticed that sometimes they get the side of the street wrong, I haven't yet found a street that they haven't mapped. Really, this site is awesome.
If you need to find out something about travel, cost, reservations, food, and facilities, then come here to find it. A great suppliment to the "Maps. Maps. Maps." link above.
Airline Tickets - Plain plane tickets? Cost too much to fly? Not any more... NAME YOUR PRICE!
The cost of air transportation has gotten quite expensive these days... But if you don't like the price that they name you then simply name your price in return, and this site will tell you if it's the "Wright" price! Now I haven't used these guys (gals?) yet myself, but frankly, the whole idea sound ludicrous enough to not only save some money, but to be a blast while I'm doing it, as well... Let me know what you find out and if they actually saved you any money, or if you just have fun trying... Of course, I probably wouldn't mind hearing 'bout that, also!!!
These links to locations were you can find images (photos, paintings, computer generated, or whatever...) and sounds (for startup/shutdown, songs, special effects, presentations or...) and such locations are updated frequently enough to warrant bookmarks.
STScI/HST Pictures - Hubble Space Telescope Images and accompanying information.
After 8 years (yes, EIGHT!) of unprecedented images, the Hubble Space Telescope has altered our very understanding of our universe, and the ways in which stars are birthed, live, and die. We have learned about comets, and asteroids, and even verified planets around other stars besides our own. We have even confirmed the existence of black holes - including one that is so massive that it is literally eating up an entire galaxy. If you wish to learn more about these phenomena, and see some really impressive images, then this is the first place you should check out!
Hubble Space Telescope - Related links to bunches of sites.
This is a search result yielding a bunch of HST sites that can cater to your every HST desire. Enjoy!
With pictures from the humorous to the shocking to the disheartening, this site has many of the best photographs from over fifty years of publication. Many of the photographs featured here have won awards for their outstanding imagery. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then these folks wrote the dictionary...!
ClixSounds - From the simple to the awesome to the simply awesome, this is where to hear it!
ClixSounds has some of the best sounds and sound effects that I've ever heard. This is a great place to get a new system alert beep, honk, burp, chime, ding, boom, or whatever. Some of the startup sounds are simply incredible, and make for a nice way of showing off your Mac - especially to those poor, misguided, Wintel users.... This site has both free sounds and commercial sounds, including a new CD with over 1,000 sounds for your use.
If you need Apple Computer Company links, here they are.
Just that. The home page for the best computer company that has ever been.

Welcome to Apple's Technical Information Library (TIL). This knowledge base contains product information, technical specifications, troubleshooting information, is updated daily with new and modified articles, and contains over 16,000 articles. This is the database that they use when you call them for technical support, and here it won't cost you $25 an hour!
The Apple Software Library is a collection of updaters, utilities, and full software installs to help keep your Apple Products running smoothly. You can locate a particular software file by either searching our library, browsing our hierarchy, or viewing a list of the most recent postings.

An information page containing their phone numbers, addresses, web sites. This page can tell you how to reach Apple in every country they do business. Great if you are not in the states and you need some assistance.
Great places for information about How To and WHY Macintosh...
MacCentral
The Ultimate Macintosh is a site that has * BUNCHES * of resource links; from software to magazines, to news groups, this site is a great suppliment to the STMUG links page. Check it out for yourself.
MacCentral - An online Mac-azine with good articles and information.
An online magazine with information about Apple and Macs and Mac OS, as well as other things that pertain to our wonderful computer company and its products. A very good place to catch up on things.
This link accesses an article about Apple's turn-around since the magical intervention in its self-destruction by Steve Jobs. I'm not certain how long this link will remain good, so if it should become broken, please E-Mail me at the address located at the bottom of this page.
MacInTouch - A Developers information site.
This site is geared more for developers and compu-nerds, but can still be of interest to some of us dummies. It has a lot of information about newly developed softwares, and also is a good place for the "power-user," or somebody who may be in charge of a company's Mac systems and need some really "serious" 'wares.
Appleaholics Anonymous (AA) - A Twelve-Step program for thetrue Mac-Addict.
Do you Mac on a regular basis, and not just socially? Do you use the Mac as a pick-me-up, or to calm down with after a stressful day? Do you find your life becoming unmanageable? Can't seem to stop thinking about it? There's help. Just come to this website for help in overcoming your Mac addiction. Take heart! Appleaholics Anonymous is a non-profit organization that seek to help encourage you and support your desire to bring your life back under control.
If you're looking for online publications, here are a few good starters.
MacAddict - You've read the magazine. You've cleaned out the disk. Now visit their website.
MacAddict is the fastest growing new computer publication ever. And after reading it's whimsical, yet informative magazine, it's easy to understand why! Though tongue-in-cheek, this magazine manages to get across some pretty decent information in an enjoyable style that isn't too heavy in the "techno-jargon." But best of all, it comes with a disk each month that is absolutely packed with software - that alone is worth the cost of subscribing! Well, here is their website; enjoy! Good alternative if you don't like the MacWeek style.
MacHome Journal - Yet another 'zine.
Mac Home Journal is another variation on a theme of Mac-oriented online magazines. Somewhat drier than most, it seems aimed more at PC users in its layout and writing style (i.e., boring....). Well, that may be a little harsh, but still, it does seem to lack the pizazz of some of the other sites.
MacTech's website has quite a few press releases about new software/hardware for the Mac. The also have a fairly extensive database of answers to Mac programming questions.
MacWeek - After it's merger with MacUser magazine, it's site has incorporated aspects of both mags.
MacUser and MacWeek have combined. While still called MacWeek, some definite changes have occurred. Good alternative if you don't care for the MacAddict style.
Macworld - A more technical magazine.
MacWorld is more of a techie's very of Mac stuff. Basically, another 'zine.
*** Note: these are locations to PURCHASE stuff, and very little - if anything - is free. Still, worth visiting...
The easiest way to locate sales, consulting, and service options for Apple products.
BuyDirect.com - Buy software directly from the manufacturer.
Okay, so you've gone ahead and downloaded all the freeware and shareware that's available, only thing is that the software you want isn't either of those... What do you do now? Why, you go here, of course!
Cyberian Outpost - A great place to buy things off the internet.
Not so much software, but they have quite a bit of hardware, and their memory prices are quite good. The only real drawback to them is that they also sell Wintel stuff.... <Yuck!>
MacMall - Another online computer hardware retailer.
They have lotsa stuff. They seem to cater more to the IBM world, rather than the real one (i.e., Mac!), and also seem a little pricey, but that's just my opinion.
MacWarehouse - Another retailer, as indistinguishable as the rest.
They sell all kinds of things, but have a better selection of software than MacMall or Cyberian Outpost. Average pricing.
Mac Zone - Can it be? Yes! It's ANOTHER retailer... Oh, joy!
Yadda, yadda, yadda. Another of the above. Go figure.
Software.net - Specializing in (can you guess it?) SOFTWARE....
Average selection. Average prices. All in all, about... well, average.
If you are looking for one of the major developers of software for the Mac, this is a good place to begin. While not an extensive list by any means, it does have some of the basic ones.
Mac OS Software Guide - Lots more than just OS, but plenty of software.
"The Mac OS Software & Hardware Guide lists the hottest software and hardware products available for the Mac OS today. It includes products that are available in retail stores, product catalogs, online, and directly from the publisher. Shareware and freeware are also included. You can browse thousands of Macintosh products in the following categories, or do a keyword search. We can also help you locate Mac OS products." (Hey, it's a quote off their page. Their words, not mine...)
Adobe Systems - Photoshop, Illustrator, Type Manager, and just about everything else.
If it's made by Adobe, it's here. If it's not, then it isn't....
Aladdin Systems - Stuffit Expander, DropStuff with Expander Enhancer, InstallerMaker and more.
When it comes to file compression utilities, these guys sure know their stuff.... (No pun intended.)
Bryce and company - One of the best 3-D terrain generators I've ever seen.
Bryce 3-D is one of the most incredible 3-D terrain generators I've ever seen. The ease of use and the sheer power of this program, combined with its rendering speed, make this program stand head and shoulders above the rest. It is one of those few 3-D programs that is actually worth the money.
Claris - ClarisWorks, Homepage, FileMaker Pro
This is the leader - and the originator of the multi-function business application, ClarisWorks (soon to be retitled to it's original name: AppleWorks. FileMaker Pro is the quintessencial application for record keeping. And, Claris HomePage (what this website is primarily generated on) is really outstanding. Check out their homepage (again, no pun intended...) and see what they have to offer.
Macromedia - Dream Weaver, Shockwave, and Director, as well as others.
This is Macromedia's new website, and is where you can download their latest and greatest software. Shockwave, for instance, is really at the forefront of its field. Pay them a visit and you'll be shocked. (Okay, okay... I meant for that one to be a pun. It was like the funny type.... only different.)
Netscape - Navigator and Communicator.
Come here and download the best internet web browser available. We won't even mention that other guy's product, here. =:o)
Real Audio/Video - High quality video and audio streaming and playback.
Come here and download a free copy of their RealAudio player and plug-in.
If you are looking for some help in creating web pages, learning HTML, Java, JavaScript, or AppleScript, then these are the links you have been looking for. Here, you will find resources such as backgounds, buttons, and basic programming information. Some of these links are very helpful for the person interested in trying their hand at developing a web page. It's not easy to do, but these resources can help.
Ace Of Space - Backgrounds by the cazillions
Ace of Space is the place where you can get the backgrounds you're looking for. With currently over 400 backgrounds, and more being added frequently, you can find some very nice backgrounds for your webpages. A special thanks goes out to the Ace of Space website for the backgrounds used in the ST. MUG website.
Here are some of the multimedia producers for the internet. These are places to get the plug-ins for the most commonly encountered additions to websites.

Shockwave Guide - Sound for the Internet

These are some miscellaneous links, but neat and helpful places that can generally make your life easier. Visit them and enjoy!
From a small company founded in 1959, the little door-to-door soap company of my youth is no longer little, nor door-to-door. This company has established itself as a major alternative to buying retail, and has made more millionaires than any other company in the world. They have over 10,000,000 square feet of covered warehouse space, and is the ONLY top fortune 500 company that has 0 debt, the Amway Corporation has companies literally knocking at their door asking this company to distribute their products, goods, and services. Amway distributors can buy everything from "9 to 5" coffee, and cars, to televisions, stereos, computers, brand name clothes, food, travel services, and bunches of other stuff at considerable savings over buying retail. And yes, they do still sell soap, but there is no relationship between the Amway company that I remember from my youth, and this New Amway. They even have gift certificates.
2fords.net - This is the server that hosts the ST.MUG website. Try them out.
The folks at http://www.2fords.net have been not only most helpful, but have provided the opportunity for us at ST.MUG to use their server - a most generous offer, so I would like to take a moment and some space to thank them. If you live in the Corpus Christi/Aransas Pass (Texas) area you might wish to try them as you ISP, as their rates are good, and are digital capable. They even have 24 hour tech support (yes, a real, live, honest-to-goodness, breathing human being at the other end of the phone line. Tired, maybe, but breathing... <I hope!>) =:o) Their tech support numbers are: 512-758-5527 or 800-741-3855.
From software to magazines, travel and family, sometimes what you get is more than what you pay for... Atleast, that is the concept behind this website that apparently has nothing better to do than go around and find all the free stuff available on the 'Net, and bundle it together in one location for you to peruse at your discretion. Want some free film? No problem. Want a free, 6-month, trial subscription to Sports Illustrated? Got that, too! How about a free Acura NSX sportscar? Go someplace else, buddy - they can only do so much... Still, this place is well worth checking out to see if they have anything that you might be interested in getting... and getting for free!
Jobs and Resumé's - The commercial says that they are what most company's prefer...
Well, I don't know, and I haven't tried them yet myself, so I can't comment, nor do I know anyone who has used them, so I guess I really can't comment... Oh, well. If any of you know more or have had personal dealings with these folks, please don't hesitate emailing me with some info, 'cause I prefer to use reliable info for these links...
Quakeintosh - If you love Quake, you have GOT to go here and see what is available to you
Ever since its release, Quake has been a fantastic game; one that provides a realistic, 3-D, virtual world into which you can delve and explore. But if you have become bored with playing the same old levels over and over, then check out all the resources that Quakeintosh provides. From new levels and new graphics, to modifications that change the very nature of the game, you can find it here. My favorite modification is called Team Fortress, which allows you to select from various classes (such as Heavy Weapons Guy, Pyromaniac, Soldier, Spy, Sniper, Medic, Engineer, and others) and then allows you to challenge others in a team game of capture the flag or death match. Check out Mac Fortress for these mods and where you can meet and play against others. From playing a clan member to playing James Bond, and even being turned into a jet aircraft and fly around, the mods here are simply AWESOME!
CNN - Access the news up to the minute.
CNN gives you access to the news, weather, sports, financial, fashion and other areas that may interest you. yadda. yadda. yadda.
Amazon.com - The World's Largest Bookstore.
If you'd rather not surf the net, or listen to your "Best of Vietnamese Polka Music" (on 78s!), or watch Married With Kids Who Are Smarter Than Their Parents...., and instead would rather just sit down to a nice, calming, peaceful book (something by Wes Craven, no doubt...) then come here and buy it. No, they can't send it through the modem, and you can't read it on the screen, but you can save a pretty penny in buying it here. (Why is it always a 'pretty' penny...? Why isn't it ever an 'ugly' penny? Or a 'not-so-pretty' penny? Or how about even a 'would look great with some massive plastic surgery' penny? But why is it always a 'pretty' penny...??? But I digress...) Anyway, come here and buy your books. It's that simple.
Similar to Amazon.com, but not as big. (Sorry, Micelle, but I can't come up with a review as long as the one for Amazon.com. If you can, send it to me....)
The Nest creates some of the best videos I have ever seen. Stories about heroes and heroines that stress the inportance of patriotism, courage, honesty, determination, and hope. By following the example of these role-models, our children can have these values reinforced, but not only are these videos educational, they are wonderfully enjoyable and entertaining. From the adventures of Marco-Polo, to George Washington, to Florence Nightinggale and Helen Keller (and others), you and your children will find these videos worth watching time and time again.
The Institute for Genomic Research is a not-for-profit research institute with interests in structural, functional, and comparative analysis of genomes and gene products in viruses, eubacteria, pathogenic bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes (both plant and animal), including humans. They are making incredible progress that promises to revolutionize medicine and our understanding of how DNA is structured. This is one of those high-IQ sites, but if you can understand it, it has a high "Gee Wiz" factor.
The Ultimate Macintosh is a site that has * BUNCHES * of resource links; from software to magazines, to news groups, this site is a great suppliment to the STMUG links page. Check it out for yourself. (repeat link from Support and Information)
Yahoo.Com - An alternative FREE EMAIL location.
Until Apple sets up a free Email service, and using Hotmail.Com is about as appealing as kissing that aunt who smells kinda funny because "That Other Guy's" company owns it, then here is an alternative that should be more acceptable. Although the layout is not quite as clean and comprehensive as Micro-sloth's free email site, you can at least avoid feeling guilty for using this one. If you are wondering why you would even want a free email account even though you already have an Email address, then go read the article "Free Email - Avoiding spam is not just for vegitarians anymore..." in the Technical Support area of the STMUG website. It's really worth the effort (IMHO.)
Hotmail.Com - Possibly the best thing that Microsoft has ever produced, and best of all, it's free!
In spite of all the bad publicity and bloated software that this company has produced, it has now established an E-Mail location where anyone can have an E-Mail address - FOR FREE. All in all, it's pretty decent. It's also a great place for you to have an account that you can give out to anyone, without fear of getting SPAM in your private E-Mail address. And if you start getting too much garbage EM, then all you have to do is get a NEW free account.
Ambrosia - The makers of Avara and Escape Velocity (amoungst others) has its own web site... here.
If you have ever wanted to conquer the galaxy, or run around inside of a bipedal machine and solve problems and shoot your buddies up, then come here to get the latest information and versions of the software. Besides these two games, they have lots of other programs available, and the software they produce is of the highest quality.

They jockey for position in the 30 lightyears of known space, all the while trying to capture the most glorious prize of all, Earth itself.
