Mid - South
USRA Div. II
Race # 3
by Roger Cleveland
In November, the Mid-South USRA returned to the always beautiful
Smokey Mountains, (smokier than usual on account of forest fires)
and Franklin Raceway in Franklin
N.C. Jr. Griffith and Jim Keys, as usual, hosted a fantastic event.
The hospitality was great, and I overheard one of the heavy hitters
comment that the level of competition at this race was the best
he had seen, short of a national event.
The day got started with GTP. Concourse went to Roger Cleveland
for originality and Marshall Cash for authenticity. The racing
was very tight, and when the checkers
fell, Mike Griffith was the winner with 533 laps, followed by
Chris Barnes with 507 laps, and Tony Bryson with 501 laps.
Next, we tackled the group 10 class. Concourse winners were Roger
Cleveland for originality and Larry Holt for authenticity. There
were 27 entries started this field, but
when it was all over, Chris Barnes emerged as the winner (590
laps), Eddie Beard was second (581), and Mike Griffith third (567).
The Busch class ran next. James Bearden was the race winner with
480 laps, Jennifer Cash was the runner up with 470 laps, and Mike
Williams completed the top
three with 407 laps.
Lastly, the scale class invaded this tri-oval for some very close
competition. Originality concourse was won by Ronnie Pressley,
while authenticity was won by Larry Holt.
When the smoke cleared, Chris Barnes (586 laps) appeared as the
race winner, followed by Jim Keys (568 laps), and Andy Weavil
(561 laps).
I think all 71 entries that raced will agree that we are looking
forward to our next race in Franklin.
