These instructions illustrate how to configure Windows ME so that you can dial the 2 Fords Network modem pool.

If you have already set up your home computer
to dial into 2 Fords Network then proceed to
Step 5 to connect to our 56k modems.
1. Introduction
In order to use many of the services available at 2 Fords Network, you have to set up your computer to access our system via a dial-up phone line. This document will walk you through the steps required to get your computer successfully connected to our modems. These instructions assume that you only want to access the Internet via 2 Fords Network, (not through another Internet provider such as CompuServe or America Online), and that you are not connected to some other type of local area network (LAN). In other words, you use a stand-alone machine at home. While you can set up your computer to access multiple types of network providers, we will only address dialup connectivity to the 2 Fords Network.
2. Hardware Requirements
Here at 2 Fords Network we have 56K - V.90 modems. We can also support slower 14.4K modems. Generally speaking modems slower than 9600baud aren't sufficient for graphical type applications like Netscape or Internet Explorer.
3. Software Requirements
Windows ME comes with all the networking
software you need to get access to the
2 Fords Network. It comes with a Telnet and FTP client, both located
in the windows directory. Once
you have established a connection to 2 Fords, you can then open
a Telnet session or
start an internet browser such as Microsoft Internet Explore or
Netscape Communicator.
4. Configuring your Modem
4.01 Click the "Start"
button and select "Settings"..."Control Panel".
4.02 Double-Click on the "Modems" icon.
4.03 If you see a modem listed, stop! Go immediately
to step 5
4.04 If you don't see a modem listed, you should see
this screen:

4.05 Click "Next"
to begin the auto-detection of your modem.
4.06 If it detects your modem, proceed to step 5.
4.07 If it doesn't find your modem, you must add it
manually.

4.08 Select your modem from
the list, then click "Next". (If your modem is not on
the
list then see your modem instruction manual for instructions
on how to add it. Most
likely you have to put in the disk that came with your modem
and then click on "Have
Disk".)

4.09
Select which com port the modem is connected to, then choose "Next".
(See
your modem instruction manual for more information.)
4.10 Now Windows ME adds your modem to the system.
Select "Finish" when this
is done. Next we have to change some modem properties.
5. Configuring Dial-Up Networking.
5.01 Click on "Start" then select "Settings", and "Dial-up Networking".

5.02 Double click on "Make New Connection".

5.03
Enter "2 Fords Network" for the name of the computer
you are dialing.
5.04 In the "Select a device:" click on
the drop arrow and select the modem you will be using to dial
up to the
internet. (You will probably have only one.)
5.05 Click "Next"

5.06 Enter your local 2 Fords
Network dialup number in the "Telephone number" field.
If you do not know this dial up number, contact our 24 hour tech
support staff.
5.07 Click "Next"

5.08 Click "Finish"
5.09 Right click on the 2 Fords Network icon and select
"Create Shortcut".
5.10 Click on "Yes" to create a shortcut
on your desktop.
5.11 Right click on the 2 Fords Network icon and select
"Properties".
5.12 Select the "Networking" tab.

5.13 Your settings should appear
like this. If they do not then make the necessary changes.
5.14 Click "OK" twice.
Finally we are ready to dial the 2 Fords Network. From now
on you won't have to do the
preceding steps, they are one-time-only set up requirements.
6. Dialing 2 Fords Network.
6.01 Double click on the "Shortcut to 2 Fords Network" icon on your desktop.

6.02 Enter your username in
the username field.
6.03 Type in your password.
6.04 If you want to automatically dial and connect
whenever you double click on the
"Shortcut to 2 Fords" icon then check "Save
password" and "Connect automatically".
6.05 Enter your local access number if needed.
6.06 Click "Connect".
6.07 You should hear the modem dial and connect.
6.08 If there are no errors while connecting the login
box will drop down into the start
menu.
6.09 If you are prompted to re-enter your password,
make sure the caps lock key is
off and make sure you entered the correct username, password,
and phone number.
6.10 Now the TCP/IP connection will be finalized between
your computer and the
Internet. At this point you are now connected to the internet
via 2 Fords Network. If you wish
to browse the internet then open a internet browser such
as Internet Explorer or
Netscape. See below on how to acquire Netscape.
7. Getting/Running Applications.
If you wish to get a copy of Netscape
Communicator and Netscape Messenger Mail
program you can obtain it in two fashions.
1. Download the latest version
of Netscape from http://home.netscape.com
2. Go to the 2 Fords Network homepage and click
on the Netscape icon link.
Before you use these applications,
you must install them! Consult your Windows
Help if you get stuck. Then, be sure to first establish the
link to the 2 Fords Network (Step 8)
before you run them.
Finally the end. We hope this helps
you get successfully connected. If you notice
any glaring omissions or something you think is completely
wrong please let us
know and we will correct it.
