WILL I GET BUSY SIGNALS ?
To maintain our reputation in this area of having the best line per customer ratio, we are continuously adding modems to our servers. In spite of keeping these high standards the possibility of a busy signal is still present. When the situation occurs, however, it is normally for a very short period of time, even during peak periods. To help reduce the possibility of busy signals, the 2 Fords Network has different price range and people per modem ratios. See the 2 Fords Network Prices & Services page for more details.
WHAT DOES UNLIMITED ACCESS MEAN ?
Unlimited access simply means that with the 2 Fords Network, you can reach all portions of the World Wide Web, even AL. However, AOL, and some others charge you an additional fee to access their site. Many times the term unlimited access is misunderstood as to mean unlimited usage. This is not the case with any service providers. All Internet service providers who offer unlimited access, defines the service as based on intermittent usage. This simply means that you cannot leave your computer connected to the Internet for 24 hours without logging out. This is done to avoid abuse or users forgetting to log out. In this way, all users get better facility of access.
With this in mind, the 2 Fords Network has set two disconnection delays. The first occurs after 20 minutes of inactivity, the other occurs after 6 consecutive hours on-line. There is nothing stopping you from going back on-line immediately following such a delay.
WHAT IS THE REASON FOR SPEED VARIATIONS ON THE INTERNET ?
To fully understand what is involved when you connect to Internet, you must first understand how data travels through this vast network.
When you send or receive information, the data goes through your modem, the telephone line that is connected to an outlet, the telephone network, our modems, the Internet network which is made-up of various paths over different types of links, through various routers and servers around the planet.
You will easily understand that the speed at which data travels over the Internet can be influenced by one or more of these elements and that it will vary constantly during navigation. You can only navigate as fast as the weakest link in the chain will allow you to, regardless of your modems capacity.
Presently, the most important obstacles in the way of high-speed access to the Internet are : telephone network infrastructures which were designed to carry voice transmission, not high-volume data transmission, the quality of links by which servers are accessed on the Internet and bottlenecks that can occur with these servers during peak periods.
Of course there are a certain number of elements that we can control, such as our network. Since we have the largest number of servers in this area and high-speed T-1 links to the backbone that is equal to or greater than any of our competitors in this area, you can be assured that your connection to the internet is the absolute best possible through the 2 Fords Network.
To assure the best possible connection it is important to go through a few basic verifications such as : your modems settings, the length and the quality of the telephone line that runs between your modem and the telephone outlet and even the quality of other telephones connected to the same line as your modem. It is essential not to overload your telephone line with too many telephones and to stick to quality products.
